DJI launched DJI Terra in 2019 for users who needed a reliable and effective software tool for mapping. 49 software updates later, we have continued to improve and expand the features available to our users for mapping.

Today, DJI Terra is used to process mapping data captured with the Mavic 3E, Zenmuse P1, Zenmuse L2, and Phantom 4 RTK. This highly intuitive software has proven to be a real game-changer for surveyors, who can use it easily with minimal training. Below we have compiled some key reasons that demonstrate why DJI Terra can be considered one of the best photogrammetry processing tools that can actually support all missions from data acquisition all the way through analysis and execution.

1. DJI Terra is Integrated

Compared to other solutions, DJI Terra is the natural extension of DJI drones, developed by a UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) solution provider with UAS data in mind. The seamless transition from a surveyor’s favorite drone, like a Mavic 3E or Matrice 350 RTK with Zenmuse P1 for mapping solutions removes all barriers to switching platforms and uploading data. This further facilitates the selection of drones for data capturing and integration between acquisition, processing, analysis, and execution.

2. Faster Data Processing Speeds

Designed to be used by all stakeholders in a mission, DJI Terra does not require any prior training or specific configuration. The workflow is as simple as a drag and drop process, enabling users to import data efficiently from a DJI payload more efficiently. All it takes is extracting the SD card from the device and inserting it in your computer to import data and process it either as 2D orthomosaics or 3D realistic models.

A recent case study in Central America showcased the unique capabilities of using LiDAR technology to capture 3D data to discover ancient Maya civilizations. Researchers then used DJI Terra then process over 700GB of LIDAR data within a day, generating DTM (Digital Terrain Models) in LAS (LASer) file format and DEM (Digital Elevation Models) at 100% density. Thanks to DJI Terra’s point cloud classification features, researchers were able to remove jungle canopies and focus on the ground point cloud data, enabling fast and accurate searches of ancient Maya ruins.

3. Detailed Inspection Mission Planning

Currently, DJI Terra includes Ground Points Classification, DEM, and Contour Lines for LiDAR projects. In the next version of Terra, the Point Cloud generated from Photogrammetry will be improved. The Photogrammetry workflow, now with added support for Ground Point Classification, DEM, Contour Lines, Grid of Points, and Tin Model, will be even more user-friendly, making your work easier and more efficient. Additionally, in the upcoming version of Terra, the Fusion workflow will be faster compared to the Photogrammetry workflow and will provide more detailed geometry, further empowering you to create high-quality 3D models with ease.

 4. Photogrammetry Point Cloud Capabilities

Some of the alternative options available on the market are desktop-based drone mapping software combined with their own mission planning app. In DJI Terra, the detailed inspection planning feature is integrated within the system in a unique way: the software automatically generates waypoints and flight routes based on the local 3D mode, point cloud or third-party point cloud, and a simulated camera view is displayed on screen for automated inspection workflows.

5. LiDAR Data Collection Capabilities

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data plays a crucial role in various applications, including topographic mapping, urban planning, forestry management, and infrastructure development. Its precision and accuracy provide detailed 3D representations of the structures and landscapes, making it an invaluable tool for various industries. Drones equipped with LiDAR technology can rapidly cover large areas, even in challenging or inaccessible terrains, capturing high-resolution data at a fraction of the time and cost compared to traditional surveying methods.

This data can be transferred to DJI Terra and processed at incredible speeds. Users can classify ground points to get an accurate terrain analysis of their location, generate DEM for precise visualization of terrain features, and conduct detailed profile analysis to extract valuable insights to improve the next steps of a process. LiDAR point cloud data has proven effective when surveying forests, construction plots, and powerlines. Recently, conservationists used an M350 RTK with the LiDAR-equipped Zenmuse L2 to collect data and determine the cause of the loss of monarch butterfly's migration habitat in Central Mexico

6. Easy Model Sharing

DJI Modify is our newest software innovation meant to streamline users' workflows. It seamlessly integrates with DJI Terra to create a complete solution for aerial surveying, modeling, and efficient model editing. The streamlined model sharing ensures a smooth transition from modeling to model editing, meeting the operational needs of industry professionals across various sectors.

Launching DJI Modify in a DJI Terra 3D modeling project is a simple one-click process. This integration simplifies the model editing process, offering efficiency and a complete solution. DJI Modify's activation within DJI Terra automatically creates files for efficient model editing, including pre-identified objects and pre-processing of a model.

7. Easy Application Integration

DJI Terra is a powerful tool that supports output in common formats, including TIFF orthomosaic and elevation models, LAS point cloud format, and six common 3D model formats such as B3DM, OSGB, OBJ, as well as DXF and SHP contour formats. These results can be easily integrated into various GIS, CAD, and other third-party data application software, enabling a wide range of drone data industry applications. With DJI Terra, you have the power and flexibility to handle diverse data formats and applications confidently.
